How did this happen?

Hi, I’m Aaron. I worked for years as a programmer. There were steady pay raises along the way and more responsibility. I mostly enjoyed my work, but never really had extra money. Then I realized that it didn’t matter how much money I made – I would always spend it. I would receive a new lump sum for some reason or other and not two months later it would be gone. It was a recurring theme. I’d been getting regular raises and had a well-paying job, so where was my money? Why did that keep happening? I did some research.
